Synopsis:
The peace and quiet of a rock star and her lover on an Italian island are disrupted by an impromptu visit from her ex and his putative newfound daughter. Smouldering tensions gradually bubble to the surface of this poolside retreat.
Review:
An arty adaptation of Jacques Deray's La Piscine (1969), the director and star's second collaboration, like his first, centres around an unfortunate poolside demise; perhaps that is what gave him the idea of walking in the footsteps of Schneider and Delon. Whatever her talents as an actress, Swinton does not quite have the requisite sexual magnetism, a role which ironically reverts to the Birkin character (Johnson), a case of the shoe being on the other foot. Nevertheless, Fiennes enjoys himself in one of his more flamboyant portrayals, while Schoenaerts just looks uncomfortable with having nothing much to do except react. A curate's egg of a movie, then, but tremendously absorbing, gripping even, showing a master stylist at home in this Rendellian world.
