Bande à part (1964)
(The Outsiders)
Country: FR
Technical: bw 95m
Director: Jean-Luc Godard
Cast: Anna Karina, Claude Brasseur, Sami Frey
Synopsis:
Two no-hopers attach themselves to a young girl taking English lessons whose aunt is hostess to a lodger with thousands of francs stashed in his room.
Review:
Famous for its dance sequence in a cafe, typically interrupted by the director's voice on the soundtrack, this is one of Godard's more accessible works, full of inter-textual references and essentially a riff on Série B plot motifs and gestures. As in all his films, one has to treat with caution what one sees on the screen, fantasy and reality being at the forefront of the film's concerns. If you like, it does to the western what A Bout de Souffle did to the gangster film.
