Before Sunset (2004)
Country: US
Technical: col 80m
Director: Richard Linklater
Cast: Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy, Vernon Dobtcheff
Synopsis:
Jesse and Céline, the characters from Before Sunrise, again meet by chance in Paris, where he is completing a promotion tour for his new book inspired by their brief encounter nine years previously.
Review:
Like the first film, essentially a filmed conversation (lots of tracking shots as they amble through the capital, find a café, walk through a park, catch a boat ride). The actors, like their characters, take a while to settle into their roles opposite one another, but gradually the unspoken thoughts and emotions behind their awkwardness come to the fore. It's a poignant reflection on what a romantic liaison, however shortlived, can do to the rest of our lives, and whether something can be regained. The outcome will please the sentimental, though being in a film is a bit of a cheat since we avoid the messy collateral damage that will inevitably ensue, begging the question of how sustainable Jesse's decision can be. The location and Allenesque banter at times makes the film uncannily resemble Delpy's own 2 Days in Paris, not least because her father appears to have been cast in this one too!
