Billy Elliot (2000)

£0.00

Country: GB
Technical: col 110m
Director: Stephen Daldry
Cast: Julie Walters, Gary Lewis, Jamie Bell, Jamie Draven, Patrick Malahide, Barbara Leigh-Hunt

Synopsis:

During the 1984 miners' strike a Durham schoolboy struggles with his love of dance and his family's disdain for it to gain a place at the Royal Ballet School.

Review:

Echoing Brassed Off and Little Voice before it, this is nevertheless a uniquely affecting story of conflicting forces in a child's life: the loss of a mother, his family's macho prejudice against ballet exacerbated by its current anxieties, his self-doubt and his irrepressible verve when he takes wing. The film balances all these and avoids condescension, sentimentality and political point-scoring. Credit is due to direction, choreography and performances all round.
