Boyhood (2014)
Country: US
Technical: col 165m
Director: Richard Linklater
Cast: Ellar Coltrane, Patricia Arquette, Ethan Hawke, Lorelei Linklater
Synopsis:
From age seven to nineteen, we follow the path to maturity of an ordinary American boy, raised by his mother as she trains to be a teacher.
Review:
A remarkable endeavour, returned to at intervals over the years of production by Linklater and his cast, whom we watch age before our eyes in what must be an unprecedented piece of stellar self-exposure. Without any other plot thread than the lives of its characters, the film holds our attention so that we hardly notice the lurches forward a year or two in the action. The impression we are left with is that of the unalterable mess of human existence and the astonishing resilience of youth: relationships blossom and die, but Mason just moves forward inexorably, unaccountably demanding some sort of special role for himself in the world. Without such optimism, Linklater seems to be saying, humanity would be doomed. Unsurprisingly, the picture received considerable recognition at the Oscars.
