The Blue Angel (1930)
(Der Blaue Engel)
Country: GER
Technical: bw 98m
Director: Josef Von Sternberg
Cast: Emil Jannings, Marlene Dietrich
Synopsis:
A schoolmaster falls for a nightclub artiste and is undone.
Review:
This dated melodrama retains one or two stunning moments, and Jannings is magnificent, but Dietrich is obstinately unseductive by modern standards, although she surpasses her co-star in naturalistic acting, and it was this un-arch knowing quality that doubtless appealed to Hollywood. Historically it was a massive international success and launched her American career, not to say her director's.
