Le ciel, les oiseaux et...ta mère! (1998)
(Boys on the Beach)
Country: FR
Technical: col 90m
Director: Djamel Bensalah
Cast: Jamel Debbouze, Julien Courbey, Lorant Deutsch, Stéphane Soo Mongo
Synopsis:
Four eighteen year-olds from the Paris ghetto of St Denis make a phoney documentary with their camcorder and win a holiday in Biarritz. There they set about getting laid, but their inexperience and inverted snobbery betray them at every turn.
Review:
Positively brimming with inner city slang and evincing that typically French lack of sentimentality for its characters, this coming-of-age comedy rings the changes on its predecessors both sociologically and cinematically (camcorder and live-action footage are mixed throughout) and is vastly preferable to its American counterparts. That said, the incessant shouting does get a bit much after a while and narratively speaking its only substance is a boy-gets-girl-loses-girl-gets-girl subplot between the Arab and a pretty Jewess from the other side of the périph.
