Entre les murs (2008)

(The Class)

Country: FR
Technical: col/2.35:1 130m
Director: Laurent Cantet
Cast: François Bégaudeau, Agame Malembo-Emene

Synopsis:

A school year in the lives of a difficult class of ninth graders and their French teacher at a Parisian collège is marked by the expulsion of a Malian boy for violent and disruptive behaviour.

Review:

Of all the many films about teaching over the years - and there have been a good number in France alone - this perhaps comes closest to capturing a realistic classroom dynamic on film: the febrile mood of a class, the fragility of concentration on what is essential to the lesson, for teacher and pupil alike; the ambivalence of the pupil/teacher relationship, at once emotionally dependent and mistrustful. Based on the true experiences of its actor/writer, it won the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 2008.
