Fanny (2013)
Country: FR
Technical: col 102m
Director: Daniel Auteuil
Cast: Daniel Auteuil, Victoire Bélézy, Jean-Pierre Darroussin, Raphaël Personnaz
Synopsis:
Fanny and César are heartbroken by the departure of Marius for an extended tour at sea. However, when Fanny discovers she is expecting her lover's child, Maître Panisse's offer of marriage seems her only way out.
Review:
Part Two of Auteuil's re-visualisation of Pagnol's masterly trio of plays reduces the drama to its essentials and, in a handful of extended scenes separated by atmospheric shots of Marseilles life, succeeds in capturing its proletarian poetry. Auteuil himself, while no replacement for Raimu, does a solid enough job (which nevertheless fails to eclipse memories of his Ugolin), and Bélézy makes an affecting - and far more attractive - Fanny.
