Fighting his wife over the memory of their son, embattled by investors over his financial position, exclusive car manufacturer Enzo Ferrari stakes everything on winning the Mille Miglia with his racing team. Meanwhile, Laura discovers his best kept secret, a mistress with her own son by him.
Review:
Coming close on the heels of the superficially similar House of Gucci, Mann's film has more sinew and is more compelling. Driver betters himself in the central role, and the motoring sequences are brilliantly and imaginatively shot. The practice of having English spoken in heavily accented Italian, however, leads to numerous lacunae in processing the dialogue, and the climactic race becomes a confusion of helmeted figures who look very similar. Dramatically, unless you are really into cars, there is perhaps too little to engage the emotions, but the recreation of the 1950s and strength of the performances carry you through. Definitely not the classic Mann cocktail of action men besting their opponents by dint of sheer professionalism, this is rather a world in which our expendable heroes live or die by the Homeric hubris of their employer and that, in itself, is quite a hefty meal.
