Last Resort (2000)

£0.00

Country: GB
Technical: col 77m
Director: Pawel Pawlikowski
Cast: Dina Lorzun, Paddy Considine, Artiom Strelnikov

Synopsis:

A Russian mother and her son arrive in England to take advantage of an offer of marriage, but the fiancé defaults. Posing as an asylum seeker and corralled in a seaside town by the authorities, she becomes increasingly desperate until she meets bingo caller and ex-con Alfie.

Review:

A valuable socio-historical document of Britain's acute 'refugee' problem, and one which places audience sympathies squarely with this far from typical specimen. (All the same, it seems doubtful that the woman would have such a flat at her disposal.) There are some nice protrayals of characters to be found in such locations, very much in the Loach manner, and the lead couple are excellent. As character drama, though, the material is slight and under-developed.
