My New York Year (2020)
(My Salinger Year)
Country: CAN/EIRE
Technical: col 101m
Director: Philippe Falardeau
Cast: Margaret Qualley, Sigourney Weaver, Colm Feore, Douglas Booth
Synopsis:
A post-graduate student with aspirations to be a writer takes a job as assistant to J.D. Salinger's literary agent.
Review:
Set in the 1990s at the dawn of word processing technology's invasion of the workspace, Joanna Rakoff's beguiling memoir offers a glimpse into the rarefied world of book people, who are given a timely reminder by the protagonist not to lose sight of the writer's needs in finding a publisher for the book. As the bulwark between Salinger's readers and Salinger, as well as between Salinger and her boss, Rakoff sometimes confuses personal feelings and professional dealings, but never loses our sympathy. The director's poetic flights of fancy in lending material substance to the various voices in her life are particularly graceful and diverting.
