Pickup on South Street (1953)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: bw 80m
Director: Samuel Fuller
Cast: Richard Widmark, Jean Peters, Thelma Ritter

Synopsis:

A pickpocket is capable of some pretty low acts of deviousness but draws the line at working for 'no good Commies'.

Review:

Fuller's terse crime thriller programmer effectively rakes the muck from the headlines once again, falling somewhere between embracing the paranoia of the McCarthy era, with its sweaty Commie villains, and critiquing it with lines like, 'Are you waving the flag at me?' However, its surprises more than outnumber its conformities and Widmark and Ritter are unusually heavyweight talents at the service of this most pugnacious of directors.
