The Silence (2011)
(Das letzte Schweigen)
Country: GER
Technical: col/2.35:1 118m
Director: Baran bo Odar
Cast: Ulrich Thomsen, Wotan Wilke Möhring, Sebastian Blomberg, Burghart Klaussner
Synopsis:
Twenty-three years after investigating a paedophile murder, a now retired police officer, and a younger colleague himself recovering from a bereavement, are convinced that a new disappearance of a young girl is an attempt by the killer to contact his erstwhile accomplice.
Review:
Expertly filmed and delicately wrought traumatic drama, that moves beyond the Scandinavian procedural it superficially resembles to a profound examination of the effects of murder on each person involved, whether police, parents or killer. The control over camera angle and mise en scène is punctilious and virtuosic, the acting first-rate. This is a mature and unhysterical look at the 'paedophile phenomenon', but no less chilling for that.
