The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2015)
Country: US/GB/IND
Technical: col/2.35:1 122m
Director: John Madden
Cast: Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Dev Patel, Celia Imrie, Ronald Pickup, Richard Gere, David Strathairn
Synopsis:
Sonny and Mrs Donnelly go to the U.S. to secure funding for a new hotel, and an inspector arrives to check out the existing one. Meanwhile, Sonny has a competitor for his project and, so he thinks, his bride.
Review:
This paper thin premise for a sequel is really just concerned with rearranging the chess pieces on the board, as various couples circle one another, and the likes of Dench and Smith dispense end-of-life wisdom by the bucketload. The injection of American talent (and money) seems merely cynical, and Patel is permitted to overact embarrassingly in a display of Indian mannerisms worthy of Peter Sellers. Leaning towards the positive, it is a colourful, heartwarming slice of exotica that delivers the same message of self-determination as Shirley Valentine.
