Ten Canoes (2006)
Country: AUS
Technical: bw/col/scope 92m
Director: Rolf de Heer
Cast: Crusoe Kurddal, Jamie Dayindi Gulpilil, Richard Birrinbirrin
Synopsis:
A narrator tells us of a time of his ancestors, when a younger brother lusted after his elder's young wife and is told an ancient legend by the man, also the leader of their community. In it are embedded many of the belief systems that sustain the culture, and some of the actors play similar roles in each tale. The backdrop is the annual goose egg gathering expedition, accompanied by canoe building for the purpose.
Review:
'A family Homer' might well be the subtitle for this fascinating insight into a forgotten culture that existed long before the coming of the white man and which, thankfully, we can still tap into. The filmmakers have performed an anthropological service, then, besides using colour, black and white, editing and composition to transport the viewer into a different world and rhythm of narration, one where humour is never far away.
