Atanarjuat The Fast Runner (2000)
(Atanarjuat)
Country: CAN
Technical: col 168m
Director: Zacharias Kunuk
Cast: Natar Ungalaaq, Sylvia Ivalu, Peter Henry Arnatsiaq
Synopsis:
In the Arctic tundra an Inuit community is weakened by the susceptibility of one of its hunters (the fast runner) and torn apart by the evildoing of the leader's family.
Review:
A centuries old national epic depicting the myth of the defeat of evil, shot in astonishingly real conditions on digital video by self-taught native filmmakers. Everyday tasks such as driving dog sleighs, preparing meat and animal hides, and shaping snow blocks, are woven into the action. The results are slow-moving but convincingly situate the mythic in a realistic and familiar setting.
