Something of a sensation on release in its native country, this battle royal between primitive but unified communities and corrupt outsiders clearly struck a chord beyond those merely sympathising with indigenous tribes in the rainforest. Whether it is the reduction of life to food, sex and survival, or the ultra-violent video game logic, the film taps into the forces pulling societies apart the world over, and posits a future that might not be that far off, while keeping audiences guessing as to the direction it is taking. The latter point leads to unresolved details and there are curious developments later on that go unexplained, but it is fairly compelling stuff, and impressively put together.
