A classic literal treatment of the Fifties epic cycle, solemn and ponderous but impeccably produced, with a bravura chariot race sequence and several others with the power to move, thanks to direction, acting and Rozsa's score. Repeated viewings reveal an underlying symbolism of hands and water, representing earthly bonds and compassion/purification. Heston has rarely been better than here, Boyd is wooden and Hawkins is gone too soon.
