Bill (2015)

£0.00

Country: GB
Technical: col/2.39:1 94m
Director: Richard Bracewell
Cast: Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard, Ben Willbond, Helen McCrory

Synopsis:

Young Bill Shakespeare is kicked out of his minstrel band, the Mortal Coils, and journeys to London to try his hand at the theatre. Meanwhile, the King of Spain has landed with a gang of cutthroats, ostensibly to parlay the return of an English spy to the court of Queen Elizabeth.

Review:

The team responsible for the Horrible Histories on BBC tv here try their hand at feature film making and Shakespearian gag writing. The results are like Shakespeare in Love reworked by the Monty Python team, which was almost the point of Blackadder, wasn't it? As if only too aware of this, the writer-performers slip in no end of homages to the above, along with their own brand of amiable tomfoolery. It looks great, but the succession of lame jokes makes it akin to being taken round one of those museums by an out of work actor in costume, or spending an evening with Tim Vine.
