Black Swan (2010)
Country: US
Technical: col/2.35:1 108m
Director: Darren Aronofsky
Cast: Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Vincent Cassel, Barbara Hershey, Winona Ryder
Synopsis:
A ballerina who fears she will be overlooked for the great star roles scoops the lead in her French impresario's new production of Swan Lake. His reservations concerning her ability to play the role of the Black Swan are counterpointed by her own mental disintegration and encounters with her malign, and increasingly destructive, alter ego.
Review:
Aronofsky's high octane theatrical grand guignol begins by letting you think you are watching All About Eve and then turns into Les Diaboliques, tremendously entertaining if you are willing to surrender to it (much of the time you are the victim of the heroine's skewed perception, though you are given ample warning of that). It won few friends among ballet lovers but builds to a superb dramatic climax with a first and last night performance of rare intensity.
