Synopsis:
An internet terrorist targets a Chinese nuclear power plant and the stock market, and the authorities join forces with the FBI to mount an investigation. The unorthodox tactic espoused by the Chinese officer in charge is to have freed from prison in the US an old friend whose stealth code has been appropriated by the 'blackhat' in question, an operation which takes them to the Far East.
Review:
Mann's techno-thriller follows his familiar themes of professional cool and male self-possession while tackling a burning issue of our time: what happens when terrorists truly get internet savvy and start wreaking havoc with our economies and infrastructure? There is the same raw aesthetic as Miami Vice (the movie), with close-up, handheld or night-time digital cinematography, and even some of the same scenes (cf.the FBI interview with Hemsworth's slicked back con and its counterpart between Lecktor and Graham in Manhunter). What really needs swallowing hard is Hemsworth's extraordinary skill set, but that said this is a rare commodity of our time: an action pic where you have to pay close attention and even then not get everything at the first sitting.
