BlacKkKlansman (2018)
Country: US/CHI
Technical: col/2.39:1 135m
Director: Spike Lee
Cast: John David Washington, Adam Driver, Laura Harrier, Topher Grace
Synopsis:
The first black officer in Colorado Springs initiates an approach to the Ku Klux Klan which results in a fellow officer impersonating him so that he can acquire membership of the organisation.
Review:
Based on the said officer's memoir, Lee's film adopts a lightness of touch to reflect the 'too strange to be true' reality of his story. Some of the behaviours and beliefs given vent to are bad enough in the 70s context, but in the third year of the Trump presidency it all still has a familiar ring. A cleverly ironic film that at last gives Washington a role he can get his teeth into.
