Blinded by the Light (2019)

£0.00

Country: GB/US/FR
Technical: col/2.39:1 118m
Director: Gurinder Chadha
Cast: Viveik Kalra, Kulvinder Ghir, Nell Williams, Hayley Atwell, Meera Ganatra, David Hayman

Synopsis:

Sixth form student Javed dreams of becoming a writer, but he lives in 80s Luton and his Pakistani father has traditional ideas about what he should do. Then he discovers Bruce Springsteen and his world changes.

Review:

Based on a true story and continuing her run of popular, race conscious narratives, Chahda's sugarcoated coming of age tale features a winning central performance and is a salutary reminder of how racist Britain was back then. The script, however, is embarrassingly naïve, overextended and over-peopled (is there room for our hero to have two best mates?), and for anyone unfamiliar with Springsteen's music does not even do a particularly convincing job of selling it, in spite of populating the screen with lyrics at every opportunity.
