Born to be Bad (1950)
Country: US
Technical: bw 94m
Director: Nicholas Ray
Cast: Joan Fontaine, Robert Ryan, Mel Ferrer, Joan Leslie, Zachary Scott
Synopsis:
An ambitious San Francisco socialite catches a millionaire and takes a lover, while putting on a demeanour of Shirley Temple purity. Eventually the men realize they have been had.
Review:
Ray was probably the wrong director for this yawn-worthy 'noir' inflected drama, and Fontaine, who is both too old and not sexy enough, comes across as so obviously what she is that one loses patience with the whole enterprise. Existing censorship constraints did not help, with a tacked-on sentimental conclusion.
