Breaker Morant (1980)
Country: AUS
Technical: col/scope 107m
Director: Bruce Beresford
Cast: Edward Woodward, Jack Thompson
Synopsis:
Two farmers in the Boer War are tried and condemned, in spite of conflicting evidence, for a crime whose circumstances only gradually become clear to the viewer during the course of the trial.
Review:
Paths of Glory done in the style of Rashomon, as you might say if you had to pitch this, but this is easily one of the best films to come out of the Aussie renaissance, even if the opportunities for this latter element are not as availed as they might be. Thorough well written, acted and shot; thoughtful and moving; and that was about as good as it got in 1980.
