Bridge of Spies (2015)
Country: US/GER/IND
Technical: col/2.35:1 141m
Director: Steven Spielberg
Cast: Tom Hanks, Mark Rylance, Amy Ryan, Alan Alda, Sebastian Koch
Synopsis:
When the FBI catch a Soviet spy, an accomplished insurance lawyer is tasked with his defence, so that justice can be seen to be done. His appeals for due process and clemency prove well-founded when an American spy pilot is shot down and interrogated.
Review:
Impeccably nuanced and constructed, Spielberg's late entry in the Cold War drama stakes proves a gold mine for one actor in the autumn of his career, and an unexpected fillip for Rylance who, intelligent enough an actor to know that in front of the camera one need do next to nothing, proceeds to be possibly the first British actor in Hollywood ever to give an untheatrical performance. Unhappily, sentiment cannot help but get the better of the director, particularly in the unnecessary coda, but for the most part this is American mainstream at its best: intelligent, cinematic, unquestionably righteous, and beautifully resourced.
