Country: US
Technical: col/2.35:1 109m
Director: Allen Hughes
Cast: Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jeffrey Wright, Barry Pepper, Alona Tal, Kyle Chandler

Synopsis:

The mayor of New York City seeks the help of a disgraced police detective-turned private dick to tail his wife, whom he suspects of infidelity. Meanwhile his opponent in the forthcoming election campaign is making political capital out of the mayor's strategy of selling off residential housing for redevelopment in order to overturn the deficit in public finances.

Review:

An American tale in as much as while it paints a picture of abject venality on almost every front, it posits a hero who ultimately does the right thing. Never mind that he has started drinking again, his girlfriend has left him, his business is failing and he could just run off with his obviously smitten blonde secretary, no, when it comes to toppling corruption in high places, the self-made American poor boy will always make good. That, and the most mumbled soundtrack in years (Wahlberg, Crowe and Wright all equally to blame), make this is a long way from the films of Alan J. Pakula. Still, for its warts-and-all honesty and for ending on a downer, it at least deserves some credit.
