Brooklyn (2015)
Country: EIRE/GB/CAN
Technical: col 111m
Director: John Crowley
Cast: Saoirse Ronan, Emory Cohen, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent
Synopsis:
In the 1950s, an Irish girl emigrates to New York thanks to the self-sacrifice of her sister, and meets a young Italian boy who is in love with her. When fate calls her back to Ireland, she finds her heart is torn in two.
Review:
An uncommonly subtle and nuanced adaptation of Colm Tóibín's novel of self-realization, with a ravishing central performance and understated work all round. The settings are softly lit and the period well caught, but it is the impartial attention to detail in every minor character that impresses, too.
