Butterfield Eight (1960)
Country: US
Technical: col/scope 108m
Director: Daniel Mann
Cast: Elizabeth Taylor, Lawrence Harvey, Eddie Fisher, Dina Merrill
Synopsis:
An Upper East Side socialite begins an affair with a married man which leads to dependency and tragic consequences.
Review:
Bowdlerized film of a novel by John O'Hara in which the leading character is almost certainly a prostitute. Taylor turns in a strident performance but at least it is a performance; meanwhile there is zero chemistry between Harvey and her, and Fisher is an even weaker link in the machinery. In short, she may have got the Oscar but the film is a stinker.
