Butterfly Kiss (1995)

£0.00

Country: GB
Technical: bw/col 88m
Director: Michael Winterbottom
Cast: Amanda Plummer, Saskia Reeves, Ricky Tomlinson, Freda Dowie

Synopsis:

A petrol station employee joins a deranged, self-flagellating woman on a downward spiral of carjacking and murder.

Review:

Commonly summed up as a 'lesbian road movie', the film explores the volatile mix brought about by a violently unstable sociopath on a quest to find a perfect soulmate (or past lover?), and a submissive, impressionable and emotionally naïve girl who becomes smitten by her. Rather than cover the aftermath of their spree (the police are notable by their absence), Winterbottom immerses us totally in their world for eighty minutes. Whether you find it an easy ride will depend on your tolerance for body-piercings and northern accents, not to mention Amanda Plummer's Eunice, positively one of the most exasperating characters in cinema (she is very good). Reeves is also excellent at conveying the wide-eyed wonder and guilty pleasure at the one intense experience of Miriam's life, one which she has herself to bring to a tragic conclusion. The film is a great time capsule of mid-90s Britain.
