Bye-Bye (1995)

£0.00

Country: FR
Technical: col 106m
Director: Karim Dridi
Cast: Sami Bouajila, Nozha Khouadra, Philippe Ambrosini, Sofiane Mammeri

Synopsis:

Trying to escape feelings of guilt over his part in an accidental fire that killed his paraplegic brother, Isma takes his kid brother to stay with family in Marseilles. But his own inner turmoil leads to problems of integration, and the younger child's resentment of familial authority causes him to fraternise with criminal elements.

Review:

Dridi's film is significant for portraying the immigrant experience in France through the eyes of the participants. The stop-start narrative is more or less inconsequential, but, like in La graine et le mulet, it is the accumulation of details of interaction, whether racial or generational, that is eye-opening.
