La beauté du diable (1950)
(Beauty and the Devil)
Country: FR/IT
Technical: bw 96m
Director: René Clair
Cast: Michel Simon, Gérard Philipe, Nicole Besnard
Synopsis:
An eighteenth century chemist nearing the end of his life is granted the dream of youth regained by Mephistopheles, in return for his soul of course.
Review:
Clair's re-envisioning of the Faust legend has the young Faust distracted so much by the fair sex that he scarcely has time to fall into all the other sins and traps prior knowledge affords him. This is a characteristically light, backwards looking, post-war offering and a successful vehicle for Philipe's youthful good looks.
