Review:
Not a great movie, but a great piece of writing and ensemble playing. Could eight people really be such bosom pals? one asks oneself, and indeed Kasdan permits some honesty, mainly in the Hurt character's sardonic asides, but the heart of the film is still essentially warm and runny, with at least one or two quips too many, just as we are getting close to the truth. A Friends for mature students, if you like. As a consequence, the insight is not quite there in the way of Le Déclin de l'Empire Américain or Les Invasions barbares; but then that was Friends for faculty professors. In any event, it ratified one or two careers, while being the last gasp of others (who heard of JoBeth Williams after this?), and Kevin Costner played the stiff.
