The Big Short (2015)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col/2.35:1 130m
Director: Adam McKay
Cast: Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Brad Pitt, Marisa Tomei

Synopsis:

How a disparate group of individuals saw the 2007 American subprime meltdown coming, and the complex relationship of insurance swaps and CDOs that resulted, as the industry bet against itself while forgetting the human face behind the numbers.

Review:

Not as glibly packaged as The Wolf of Wall Street, this nevertheless has in common a tricksy approach besides a common theme: fraudulent playing of the numbers as if Wall Street were Las Vegas. The to-the-camera stuff is fortunately used sparingly, and the script is smart and can certainly not be accused of dumbing down its subject matter (ingenues in the world of corporate finance beware). The film does what great Hollywood product always did: tell a story that needs telling in a manner that entertains and makes a few ethical points at the same time. And the acting helps.
