Excellent atmosphere and visuals, together with Asther's performance, balanced between menace and flippancy, distinguish this last of the red hot melodramas for some time. Some of Capra's beloved social themes surprisingly raise their heads but are quickly drowned in the oriental opulence. A fascinating and richly entertaining treasure of censorship evasion.
