Review:
Blackly comic but deadly serious, McDonagh's portrayal of sudden change in an immutable landscape has an old world charm punctured by shafts of anachronism. It is tempting to see in the musician's refusal to waste any more time on 'chitchat' an allegory for Ireland's concurrent political 'coming of age', while the livestock farmer's bucolic simplicity, or 'niceness', equates to your standard affable 'Oirishman', oblivious to the larger forces at work. Finger loppings and croft burning seem out of place otherwise. Carter Burwell's mystical score and the dumb loyalty of animals enrich the flavour of this idiosyncratic Irish stew.
