The Battle of the Century (1927)
Country: US
Technical: bw. 19m silent
Director: Clyde Bruckman
Cast: Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, Dorothy Coburn
Synopsis:
Oliver manages Stan in a boxing match, which they lose. Some business with a banana skin leads to an altercation with a pie vendor, and a pie fight ensues which encompasses the whole street.
Review:
Part of the first reel is still lost from this silent short, which in any case owes its celebrity to the custard pie fight. The latter has a certain charm, with Ollie hurtling pies across the street past the camera, but nearly all the recipients blink before they are struck, making it seem primitive now. (This involuntary blink can be got around with editing, if you have enough coverage of the thrower.)
