The Beasts (2022)
(As bestas)
Country: SP/FR
Technical: col/2.39:1 137m
Director: Rodrigo Sorogoyen
Cast: Marina Foïs, Denis Ménochet, Luis Zahera, Diego Anido
Synopsis:
A French couple retire to a farm in distant Galicia, but their modern ways irritate the local villagers and when they refuse to sign off on a wind turbine farm in the locality, the neighbours begin a campaign of harassment that threatens to turn violent.
Review:
Inspired by a true story of a Dutch couple, this tense eco-thriller eschews conventional genre riffs in the Straw Dogs tradition and opts for a slow-burn approach greatly aided by the unsettlingly non-committal score. It begins with a potentially upsetting sequence involving horses being wrestled to the ground, which is, however, not only a foreshadowing of later events but introduces the theme of traditional practices (often linked to sustainability) versus modern sensibilities. The animals are not seen again, but their presence hangs over the film in the shape of the title which, one is tempted to suspect, transfers to the not so neighbourly brothers.
