A Complete Unknown (2024)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col/2.39:1 141m
Director: James Mangold
Cast: Timothée Chalamet, Edward Norton, Elle Fanning, Monica Barbaro

Synopsis:

The early career of Bob Dylan, from his visit to Woody Guthrie as a 'complete unknown' in 1961, to his break away from the Folk movement by using electronic instruments at the 1965 Newport festival.

Review:

Notable among musical biopics in its eye for realistic detail and focus on the music rather than the personality (or is that just Dylan?), Mangold's genesis story suffers from its subject's lack of origins and general opacity. Nevertheless, thanks to the source novel's focus on a defined period, and one in which so much happened to shake any artistic movement out of complacency, the film is able to preserve both the myth and the material.
