Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
Country: US
Technical: col/2.35:1 124m
Director: Joe Johnston
Cast: Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Hugo Weaving, Tommy Lee Jones, Sebastian Stan, Toby Jones, Dominic Cooper, Stanley Tucci
Synopsis:
During WW2 a renegade Nazi, who has appropriated a regenerative serum that makes him superhuman, acquires a legendary source of limitless energy and proceeds to use it to build weapons against humanity. In response the United States commission a weakling soldier with the same serum, because he possesses all the solid American virtues.
Review:
What utter tosh this comic strip stuff is, when you write out the synopsis. Paving the way for an expanding Marvel universe, this first Captain America instalment takes us places we have all been before and amps them up for the big screen. It's far too long, contains barely an ounce of suspense, since best and strongest always wins, but does possess a redeeming awareness of how preposterous it is. Effects work is predictably, and numbingly, efficient. The standout moments are those with Tommy Lee Jones or Hayley Atwell.
