Captain Corelli's Mandolin (2001)

£0.00

Country: US/FR/GB
Technical: DeLuxe/Panavision 129m
Director: John Madden
Cast: Nicolas Cage, Penélope Cruz, John Hurt, Christian Bale, Irene Papas

Synopsis:

On the Ionian island of Cephallonia during the Second World War a Doctor's daughter is torn between her attraction to a soldier of the occupying Italian army billetted at their house, and her loyalty to her fiancé and country.

Review:

The sprawling novel is of course about much more than love - how a country and people can survive betrayal and man-made or natural disasters - but it is this part which the film, wisely, deals with. The paring down makes for some odd leaps and changes in character portrayal but the performances are pleasant enough, Cage walking away with the film whenever he is on screen.
