Carnage (2011)

£0.00

Country: FR/GER/POL/SP
Technical: col/2.35:1 80m
Director: Roman Polanski
Cast: Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, John C. Reilly, Christoph Waltz

Synopsis:

After one of their offspring has injured another in an altercation, the two concerned sets of parents meet to agree on how best to proceed. Before long, however, the brittle veneer of civilized discourse gives way to recriminations and marital scab-picking.

Review:

The contrivances of this splendidly claustrophobic theatre piece become more apparent in the cinema, as the couples repeatedly go back in for one more cup of coffee when it should be clear to all that they need a break from each other. But the performances are so excellent, and Polanski blocks it so well, that it is only a fleeting irritation. This is another of those Albee-esque encounters, where everyone loses their dignity and alcohol provides the ultimate lubricant of their undoing. It also has a judiciously managed contemporary ingredient in the shape of Alan's hyperactive mobile phone.
