What ought to have been a sobering, hard to watch, piece of drama, preferably with unknowns, and better still in Vietnam, turns into, in De Palma's hands, an aestheticized piece of cinema, with all the voyeuristic queasiness that entails. Some sort of dignity, however, remains in the performances.
