Country: SP/FR
Technical: col 113m
Director: Daniel Monzón
Cast: Luis Tosar, Alberto Ammann, Marta Etura

Synopsis:

The day before commencing work at the Zamora penitentiary, a prison guard is isolated and caught up in the takeover of a high security wing by a lethal group prisoners. Under the leadership of a notorious killer, Malamadre, they proceed to hold hostage a group of ETA terrorists and demand improvements in their treatment. Ironically, as our beleaguered hero learns to behave more and more like a criminal, it is from the authorities and brutalising guards without that he must fear the most.

Review:

Both a more or less conscientious polemic in favour of humane treatment of prisoners, and an honest-to-goodness thriller, this exciting film combines elements of Carandiru and Das Experiment and has outstanding work from its cast. Tosar dominates the film as the charismatic Malamadre, whom you end up liking perhaps a bit too much.
