César et Rosalie (1972)

(César and Rosalie)

Country: FR/IT/GER
Technical: Eastmancolor 110m
Director: Claude Sautet
Cast: Yves Montand, Romy Schneider, Sami Frey, Umberto Orsini

Synopsis:

A comic book artist returns to France to find that the woman he once loved has left her husband and is in a relationship with a much older man. The latter fights hard to keep her but in the end they both lose, and become friends with each other.

Review:

Not quite Jules et Jim, for Rosalie is not the monster of egotism that Catherine was, nor is the conclusion so tragic. Sautet's film is an actors' gem, allowing the principals to shine in their different ways, Montand all extrovert and volatile, Frey smiling and inscrutable; but it is Romy who sticks in the mind the most, for her character's lack of guile and simultaneous adherence to the principle of liberty and right to love two men at the same time. She is unremittingly warm and natural in front of the camera, truly one of the cinema's finest actresses. A young Isabelle Huppert plays a supporting role, it is not too clear with what relationship to the rest of the characters.
