Coco Before Chanel (2009)
(Coco avant Chanel)
Country: FR
Technical: col/2.35:1 105m
Director: Anne Fontaine
Cast: Audrey Tautou, Benoît Poelvoorde, Alessandro Nivola, Marie Gillain, Emmanuelle Devos
Synopsis:
An orphan girl moves from being a café entertainer cum seamstress to moving in with a member of the landed gentry, making hats for his various demi-monde acquaintances. She falls in love with an English businessman houseguest but is destined to remain single, becoming a sought after milliner and couturière.
Review:
A film too clearly modelled after Ma Vie en Rose to be taken entirely on its own merits. Everything about it is adequate and professional, but the screenplay is largely devoid of event and it moves sluggishly along, depending for its interest on the star quality of its lead, which is sadly wanting. Fortunately her co-star Mr Poelvoorde is well worth the watch.
