Colette (2018)

£0.00

Country: GB/US/FR/HUN/NL
Technical: col/2.35:1 111m
Director: Wash Westmoreland
Cast: Keira Knightley, Dominic West, Fiona Shaw

Synopsis:

Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette is plucked from her rural roots by the editor-cum-impresario known as 'Willy' and introduced to Parisian society. However, she soon tires of his infidelities and of being used as an anonymous contributor to his authorship.

Review:

Lavish, sparklingly written and supremely acted biopic which, rather than illustrate events from a life, focuses on those qualities that made its subject special and the influences that gave rise to her fully fledged self. At the same time, the characterization of Willy, who could so easily fall into the cliché of faithless spendthrift, is credited with recognizing her intelligence and modernity, even if he is ultimately unable to subdue her to his purposes. A film about artistic and sexual becoming, then, which does not make the more facile choices of Becoming Jane.
