Colorado Territory (1949)
Country: US
Technical: bw 93m
Director: Raoul Walsh
Cast: Joel McCrea, Virginia Mayo, Dorothy Malone
Synopsis:
A robber plans his last job before heading south with his girl.
Review:
Walsh here remade High Sierra as a Western, and the effect is tighter than before, with McCrea perfect in an ambivalent role and Mayo offering feisty support. The nearly final shot of the lovers caught in a hail of bullets is not only dangerous for the time in its unabashed brutality (gun and victim were not supposed to appear in the same shot: Walsh cunningly uses gunsmoke), but also subversive in that their expressions betray an ecstatic Liebestod.
