Uncle Vanya transferred to the Australian outback is the interest here, the film being made at roughly the same time as Louis Malle's and Anthony Hopkins's own very individual treatments. Neill takes the part of the modern thinking doctor character, and the slight alteration to the themes rendered possible by the transposition yields up some points of interest.
